Pretty soon, the R8 will be gone, bringing to a close an unlikely supercar story that started 20 years ago with a concept that redefined how we viewed Audi. It’s a crying shame that the car won’t live beyond its second generation, at least not in any recognisable form, but the German manufacturer is at least planning “something special” to send off the model.

Originally teased last Wednesday, what Audi is actually doing is a short film (not another special edition, sorry - that job has been left to the R8 GT) which fans can get involved in the making of from now until 15 September.

Each day, users will be able to vote on a particular aspect of the film, starting with the location. On Audi USA's Instagram story, you can pick between winding roads, city streets, racetrack or desert for the setting. We don't yet know when the finished product will be out, but since they'll need to go and film the thing once the answers are all in, we can safely expect to wait until later in the year.

We're also not sure if it'll involve the special liveried R8 shown in Audi's coverage, or the wild R8 GT (above), which features a massive swan-neck rear wing among various other aggressive aero appendages. It develops 612bhp from its 5.2-litre V10, all of which is sent to the rear wheels. Perhaps the type of R8 used will be one of the questions posed to fans.

As for any future R8, we can only speculate, because Audi hasn’t confirmed exactly what its future holds. It seems fairly certain there won’t be another one powered by combustion, but the name could be used for an EV. Audi is certainly happy to repurpose badges for very different kinds of models in the electric age, as evidenced by the TT, which is set to be reborn as an electric crossover.
