GTA 6 Should Be Here At Some Point In 2024

Comments made by Take-Two Interactive’s CEO could point to GTA 6’s release window

Soon, Grand Theft Auto V will be celebrating its 10th birthday. And yet, the long-awaited GTA 6 (or GTA VI, depending on how its makers choose to stylise) still hasn’t emerged, but we do at least have some idea of when it might finally be released.

GTA 6 release date

In a recent earnings call for the 2025 fiscal year, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnic said to expect a “significant inflection point...which we believe will include new record levels of operating performance”. Yes, that’s not exactly concrete, but if there’s one Take-Two property which is guaranteed to provide record financial performance for the company, which owns Rockstar Games, it’s Grand Theft Auto.

The 2025 fiscal year runs from April 2024 to March 2025, and we reckon the release would land somewhere in the middle. All bar one of the main releases in the franchise have come in September - November, and it wouldn't be a surprise for the same thing to happen for GTA 6 - after all, it'd be in an opportune window to appear on Christmas wish lists.

What is confirmed at this point is that the game is indeed in development, and has been for some time. In February 2022, Rockstar Games finally confirmed that “active development” for the next instalment is “well underway”.

In an update post on its website at the time, the company said:

“With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.”

GTA 6 setting and map

“Official details” since then have been thin on the ground. According to a leak, though, GTA VI will apparently return to Vice City, a fictionalised version of Miami seen in the franchise before.

Reportedly, the map will also include surrounding areas, much like how GTA V’s LA-influenced ‘San Andreas’ included a huge environment before the city limits to explore. This could well involve the Everglades swampland, and that being the case, we should think the developers will include airboats for players to steal.

It was reported a few years ago that ‘GTA VI’ was due to be a smaller game than V on release and expanded later via updates, with the intention of protecting staff from working excessive overtime hours to push the game over the line. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, who’s no longer with the company, infamously noted in 2018 that Red Dead Redemption 2 developers were working 100-hour weeks on the game.

If the single player is as short as the fifth one, then don’t bother. San Andreas level single player, or go without.
